A lovely drive from Clonmel heads up into the Comeraghs, with sharp turns and tempting viewing points on the way. Expansive heather moorland surrounds the road as it reaches its high point and provides a perfect starting point to reach the summit of Laghtnafrankee - just after a cattle grid there is a left turn with room for several cars.

A chat with a local 80 year old gent who still enjoys walking and had tales of terrifying screeching in the night preceded the off. A well defined track through the heather marks out the route to the summit. Swallows swooped and large bees buzzed in the warm June air. Across towards Knockanaffrin paragilders hung stubbornly in the air.

The expanse of low land to the north becomes ever apparent with increased height. Walking is ever so easy. There were some scrambler tracks and I am sure they think I am as big a nuisance as I think they are! Pass a couple of well balanced cairns before reaching the old summit cairn with trig point in a lung busting 20 minutes (not!).

Great views west corralled between the Galtee and Knockmealdown mountain ranges Fields of oilseed rape were in full bloom and positively glowed in the distance whilst large flying beetles crash landed all around (and on) me. Added to various other flying insects it felt like a busy airport was nearby.

A super easy return meant I had a gentle introduction to the Comeraghs after a 5 hour drive from the distant North. It was not too far to the famed Coumshingaun for an overnight camp......
