Round of three tops taking in Carnanelly, its West top and Mullaghbane, added in an attempt to make a longer circular walk out of the day.
The route begins in Goles Forest carpark, through the gate and takes the first right turn at the fork after only 200m - Carnanelly itself can also be reached by turning left, meaning ascending by the left and descending by the right track making a short circuit is possible (Track 1508). The right track is on a good forest road for about 1500m, but after that you need to cross a band of cleared forest and a deep gully before heading directly up to Carnanelly. After here the route follows the fence to the West top and on to Mullaghbane.
The difficulties begin at this stage - there are two obvious possibilities; head north to the B47 (See Colin Murphy comment on Mullaghbane page) or attempt to reach Goles forest directly - I chose the latter, and am not sure I chose well! The route necessitated crossing the Altaloran Glen as well as the previously mentioned gully and band of cleared forest. This was particularly hard going, especially given the heat (the hottest day of the year!) and the horrible underfoot conditions - soft tussocky heathery yielding and sapping ground.
Given the modest length and total ascent in this walk, I found it particularly draining - impossible to recommend - treat this track less as a direction and more as a warning!
