Start at carpark at C 122 262. Walk to pump house at the end of the lake, then cross gate and keep an eye out for a faint path that leads to the summit. There is speculation whether Loughsalt itself was formed by glacial action or if the lake lies in the crater of an extinct Volcano. In any case it is very deep being over 70 metres to the bottom. It also has the exception of having a spring source and the water is indeed crystal clear. This is a very beautiful part of Donegal with 360 degree wonderful views of North West Donegal and beyond. The going underfoot for this walk was generally very good even after a week of heavy rain. There were a couple of very steep sections on the way back including a gully so a little extra care was needed. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable walk in a remote but lovely part of Donegal
