There is only one way to do the Dublin Mountain Way (DMW) and that is in one go. If one is a bagger of summits the Dublin Mountains do not pose a great deal of excitement and are usually bypassed for Wicklow. The Dublin Mountains are usually achieved while dragging your children up them so they can experience your hobby (not theirs!) on very accessable mountains. I felt obliged that living in Dublin the DMW was something which had to be walked. Previously I have walked almost all of it but not in one go and with the amount of road in it I was never really pushed to do it but as I say if we are bagging summits this also needs to be included in every East Coast list of Hill Walking.
The challenge isn't the peaks, it is the distance. I measured at 43.35 KMS on my Garmin. As I left from Shamrock Rovers ground in Tallaght I thought this was all a bit easy, through the roads and Parks and flat forests paths up to Bohernabreena I felt great. Little did I realise that Jonny Foxes was still25KMS away.
The DMW like many things is made up of 6 - 7 individual walks across the bredth of Dublin, it is the sum of all these parts that makes it a challenge.The bottom of Cruagh is a sensible half way (ish) mark and a good stop for lunch. Tibradden and Fairy Castle are all easily manageable with some lovely forest walks to the East of Two Rock which I would estimate are rarely walked.
The hard bit comes when you exit the forests and return to the roads at Glencullen. The temptation to stop at Jonny Foxes is large but the views as you descend towards Kilternan are truly lovely.
There is a Topaz Station for refreshments at this point 34kms into the walk which psychologically is a great stopping point. The Scalp Forest brings further spectacular views to the walk and soon after there is a feeling of great satisfaction that you are going to reach the end as Rathmichael approaches. At this point the legs are getting heavy but the terrain is flat to downhill and the thoughts of Bradys pub will spur you on to the end.
Conclusion, after completing it is well worth doing but it should be walked as a thru-hiker to really appreciate what a great walk and newish amenity we have in Dublin.
1. I would suggest walking West to East
2. The addition of a few more signs or changing of locations would be advantageous around Thomas Davy GAA Club and generally on the road parts.
3. There is a road blocked on the route up to Cruagh wood as you pass a farm and you need to climb over the sticks blocking the road. From 20 FT it looks as though you have hit a dead-end and taken a wrong turn.
4. The downloadable maps on dublinmountains.ie are just as good if not better than the East West Mapping map.
