I drove to the lay-by that runs by the northern side of Drung Hill and parked my car there. Plenty of altitude. Then rode my (son's) bike downhill towards Glenbeigh, but turned left at the next side road and entered the valley. Free wheeled downhill across the river and then up the other side as far as my lungs could manage and walked the rest. Reached a T junction, turned right towards the mountains and hid my bike at the entrance to the bog road (marked on the map). Then ascended Macklaun, and went from there to Meentog, Coomacarrea, Teermoyle, Mullaghanarakill, Been Hill, Been Mor and onto Drung Hill. That's SEVEN Arderins and a plain 500m to boot! I had spent months planning this cunning route. Read all the books, and studied the maps. Printed out all the MV stuff...checked the Tracks. Saw that Jackill had made a brief foray from the the Drung Hill side. So I thought...this will be fresh. Groundbreaking even! Only to return home to discover that some days before I left for Kerry en famille Simon Stewart uploaded a 2005 Track of practically the same route. Why do I bother ? ( and he didn't even utilize a bicycle!). Real ascent is about 1200 metres. Half of the climbing is complete when you get Macklaun behind you. Stupendous views in all directions.I found the Peat hags a major curse.
