The day was bright and dry but cool. Left one vehicle at Turlough Hill carpark. (Had left the other at Ballinastocken). Headed up to the summit of Tonlagee. It is a long slow haul (best taken easy so as to warm up). Continued northeast down along the ridge to get beautiful views over Lough Oulter. Stopped to admire an ancient cross inscribed pillar to the right on the slope down to the saddle, heading to Stoney Top. There was a very cool wind on the way down this shaded slope. We followed the saddle from Stoney Top to Barnacullian where we stopped for a lovely rest in the sun. There are many bog hags and soft spots along this section, one of which nearly devoured Jim. We skirted to the east under Mullaghcleevaun, keeping above the source of the Ballinagee River and veered west along Billy Byrne's Gap. Continued to climb slightly up and to the north of Moanbane, above the Shining Flags. Descended the final slope until you come to the brook. Continue down the alongside this brook to the Ballynastockan road. Pick up the second vehicle and do not forget to collect the other back at the Wicklow Gap!
A beautiful trek with wide open countryside on both sides. Soft going in places. Plenty of deer to be seen on the slopes. The views out over Blessington Lakes (on a clear day!) are spectacular.
