With its summit at 1130m, there are 27 Munros with summits higher than Ben Lui, but its height, location and distinctive appearance makes it easily recognisable from afar. It is a popular destination and can be approached from Dalrigh on the A82 or from the A85. Approaching from the A85 involves crossing the River Lochy which may be troublesome or even impossible after heavy rain or snow melt. The approach from Dalrigh involves a long walk along a good track but this can be cycled as far as Allt an Rund. There is a good, well-constructed path from Allt an Rund leading up along Allt Coire Ghaothaich well into Coire Gaothach. If you are following the route described by Steve Kew in Cicerone’s “Walking the Munros Volume 1” you need to leave this path at around NN 273 267, 670m where a fainter path, marked by an easily missed small cairn, leads off to the north west ridge. If you miss this turn-off and continue higher into Coire Gaothach, heading directly towards the summit, you may end up on very steep ground. This is best escaped by accessing to the ridge to the left / South otherwise retreat and go across to the North West ridge. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/B65/comment/20759/
