The Garvellachs are an amazing set of islands, made of limestone so much lusher than those nearby.
Garbh Eileach is the largest island and has the highest point, set above a line of cliffs on the NW flank and with a lovely ridge walk leading to it. The lower ground is scrubby woodland and quite hard going. The other main island, Eilean nan Naoimh, also has a limestone ridge dropping more or less vertically to the sea on its NW edge but has two summits, one in the middle and the highest one (just) at the north end. Just below the middle summit are the remains of an early mediaeval monastery, with churches of two eras, a monk's cell, a well and a farm. Interesting place. The cross just south is reputedly the burial place of St Columba's mother Eithne. The landing places on both islands can be tricky. Garbh Eileach has a quay of sorts but the water is shallow, Eilean nan Naoimh you just moor off the rocks and scramble up. Ten of us went from Craobh Haven with Farsainn Cruises, and Tony and Julie did a great job, a brilliant trip to a stunning place. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/B4872/comment/24216/
