Picture: The profile of Creag an Dubh-loch and The Piss o the Coire Boidheach from Broad Cairn
Black lakes and granite walls
by Peter Walker 25 Apr 2020
Slightly off-route (but easily visited) from the frequently essayed round of Cairn Bannoch and Broad Cairn, the Munro top of Creag an Dubh-loch is nevertheless the most arresting eminence in its neighbourhood. For here the hummocky expanses of the Mounth plateau suddenly collapse in a quite magnificent granite precipice. This (Creag an Dubh-loch proper) is one of Britain's largest cliffs, falling over 200m for most of its 1.5km width. The cliff forms the south wall of an awesome glacial valley which gives much the best approach to all these hills, with the north side yielding little to it in scenic value with huge expanses of slabby overlaps down which a spectacular (and almost unknown) waterfall known locally as The Piss o the Coire Boidheach plunges.
