Fighting to the Top

In November 2011 my brother in law Eamonn lost his fight with cancer at the all too young age of 35. At his funeral some family and friends suggested we climb Ben Nevis to commemerate his life and in the process raise funds for the hospice that was such a help in his final months.
So July 2012 saw a hardy and determined group assemble at the foot of Nevis.
Even on the track this is no easy mountain, you start climbing from a point that is only a few meters above sea level and it is an unrelenting climb all the way to the summit.
But everyone in the group made it. A small memorial card was left by the group at the summit.
To date nearly 10,000 euro has been raised for the hospice. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/B278/comment/14729/

Did Ben Nevis as a young teenager of 15 with the rest of the family dressed in jeans,cagoules, wellies and trainers. Not exactly suitable gear but made it up and down. Back in 1928 another person got to the top in his Austin car. Now I know this feat can be achieved on a few Irish tops but it's a bit of a stretch driving up Ben Nevis. Climbing with a baby.

We've made our way up with an 8 moth old baby girl called Akvile. It was a very heard climb having her on daddy's back, but was definitely worth it. It took us 11 hours to get to the top and back. However for anyone ambitious enough to climb with a small baby on your back, I wouldn't suggest you to do it. The path is full of loose rocks and you're constantly fighting not to slip too much and not to hurt the baby. Thanks our daddy is more skilled than I am and we were able to get there and back safely. First climbed Ben Nevis in the spring of 1998 with a friend after buying a new pair of boots in Fort William. There had been a storm over the mountain a couple of hours earlier and we were waiting to see if it would blow out. It did and we Immediately went up the hill via the popular tourist trail from Ben Nevis Glen and got up in about three hours. We had had more ambitious plans regarding our route selection but time and the probability of deteriorating weather conditions commanded some pragmatism. It was really just a very long uphill slog with the views and landscape to ease our ascent. There were a few people on the hill but not enough to make it busy. Had a mostly cloudy and unusually windless summit given the general climatic situation but a couple of clearances revealed the wonder and scale of the Scottish highlands. Fortunately my boots worked perfectly and no sore feet. We made it down in a couple of hours. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/B278/comment/14963/
