Stunning Bla Bheinn
by Derry_Danderer 19 Aug 2014
I climbed this last week and think I'll struggle to find a better view from the top anywhere else in Ireland or the UK. The location is remote although in tourist season I did come across maybe 6 others in small pairs/singles en route. I followed the directions from http://www.blaven.com/blaven.aspx#bmtop and a .gpx track on walkhighlands as backup. The path is fairly obvious most of the way so would not need the gps data unless the weather closed in.
The walk starts at Loch Slapin on the Elgol peninsula where there is a car park available. A gentle uphill walk gradually gets steeper as you get to Loch Fionna-choire (the hanging loch). After this it gets extremely steep and in places treacherous, there was scrambling on very steep scree and even found myself climbing through a chimney at one point- the absolute limit of my comfort levels. Having been on Skye for 4 days and with the tail of hurricane Bertha limiting our views so much that we had seen 0% of the Cuillin ridge- it was with huge excitement that their peaks came into view as i walked towards the trig pillar on Bla Bheinn. The full ridge lay above me as well as islands, mountains and lochs in all directions. An eagle also visited my partner as I made for the summit, luckily it did nothing more than scare the absolute bejeezus out of her!
I avoided the chimney on the descent but faced a much larger scree slope this time, again about as risky as I'd be willing to get without a local guide.
We took our time with this one- with lunch, many breaks and a stop to enjoy the view at the top. All in this took ~5hrs to complete at our speed. If you are in Skye and fancy a challenge outside of the black Cuillin I could think of nothing better! Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/B1255/comment/17629/
