Getting Needled
by mcrtchly  17 Mar 2020
Perhaps one of Scotland's most impressive summits is situated along the Trottenish Ridge. Here gnarly basaltic cliffs soar above the heather-clad heath and bog on the Isle of Skye. The neon-green grass carpets the ground below huge eroded blocks of basalt which have slid from the escarpment giving the landscape a chaotic and rugged appearance reminiscent of Iceland. The Needle is a 37m high remnant from the receding cliffs and makes an impressive but hard summit to tick off (it's an E1 rock climb). Even getting to the viewpoint requires a scramble up an exposed 45 degree slope of wet grass and slippery scree. We undertook this in buckshot hail and howling wind. But the effort was worth it to witness this absolutely stupendous view. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/B10150/comment/20767/
