Notes on name: This hill is unnamed on OS maps. The names Lengad (recte Glengad) or Dooncarton and Barnacuille (recte Barnacuillew) which appear on the Discovery map are townlands. Barnacuillew is derived from Ir. Barr na Coilleadh [logainm.ie], 'top of the wood', and is therefore likely to have referred originally to a hill. William Bald's map of Co. Mayo (1830) gives the name Gubbin (prob. Ir. Gobán, 'little beak') for the SW spur which corresponds to the 233m spot height.

This is an easy summit to reach; you can almost drive all the way to the top. I took a minor road out of Poll an Tomais, turning on to it at approx A (F826 360). Drive for about 1.5km, until the road gets rough and is only a dirt track. I drove on and had to reverse back about 500m, so its best to park at the wide patch where the road effectively ends. There is a wide dirt track from the road, right up to B (F81370 37517). Turned west here, straight for the summit at C (F81061 37491). Good views of Broad Haven Bay, and the pipeline at Rossport...Whole walk only took about 30minutes to complete. If you want to ignore the private property signs, you could drive up the IAA road to the radar station from the other side of the hill. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/993/comment/3781/
