Glashedy007 on Coolcross Hill
by Glashedy007 28 Jun 2009
This is my local hill, right on the back of my house.Grid ref A (C404 470) I would climb this hill on the north side. Park on layby at rashenny ( main rd between Ballyliffin and Carndonagh) Follow country road up the hill until you reach the forestry land begins. The fun thing about this hill is that there is no set path. Once you cut through the forest march your way through long heather filled with purple flowers. There is actually a group of 4 mountains here together. Once you get to the top the views are breath taking, Malin head and Glashedy islandto the north, Slieve snacht to the south, Culdaff and Scotland to the north east. But the best thing that attracts me to the hill at least twice a week is the wildlife. Nesting buzzards, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs , partridges and pheasants. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/964/comment/3890/

Lizards on Coolcross
by three5four0 28 Jun 2010
There is just enough space for one car to park off road, at around Bun'crk (C410 477), on the minor road to north east of Coolcross Hill. From the lay-by walk a short distance to an abandon cottage, at B (C411 476), go through the gate and round the back of the cottage and cross a low fence. Then cross a hidden stream in this steep sided re entrant. Turn a small crag on the right and then walk up hill to a minor top before a short descent into a minor col. Continue over a second top, a short descent into yet another col and final ascent to the summit and trig point of Coolcross Hill.

Being apart from the other hills makes this summit a fine view point, but then again, is there any other type in Inishowen? On our descent, we contoured round the two minor tops (on their south east slopes), rejoining our route of ascent at C (C410 473). It was here we spotted the lizards in the title. Since our easter trip to the Bluestacks, we have seen at least a couple of dozen Lizards on the various hill ranges where we have been walking, 2010 must be a good year for them. A quick up and down route
by Harry Goodman 17 Aug 2011
Climbed this hill on Fri 5 Aug 2011. As a route had already been described by three5four0 for climbing it from the NE I thought I would see if an alternative might be possible from the S of the hill. I parked with permission, off road, in front of a bungalow at D&G Bed (C40715 46496) and walked a few metres SW along the road to a lane on the right D&G Bed (C40679 46479) which led up to a large conctete water storage tank D (C40714 46697). Once there I made directly up the hillside over short heather and grass and more steeply near the top. The high point is marked by a trig pillar at E (C40410 46974). I had fine views S to Slieve Snaght and Slieve Main and SW to the prominent cone of Bulbin, Slievekeeragh, Raghtin More and Mamore Head. Directly N was Malin Head Ireland's most northerly point and Croughalough our most northerly hill, visited by me on the previous evening. This short walk can easily be completed in 30 minutes (even allowing for a stop to take in the views) and is 1.58km. It also has the advantage that it is close by to Binnion for anyone wishing to bag a number of tops in the area. I am also pleased to record the very positive reaction I got from the local landowner to my request to park in front of his house. When I came down he even asked if I would like a cup of tea an offer I declined, with thanks, as I headed off in search of my next hill, Binnion. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/964/comment/6483/
