Summary for Derrylahard East : Reward precisely proportional to effort...
Summary created by Peter Walker 14 Jun, 2012
Derrylahard East is a reasonably charisma-free lump in the hinterland to the east of Dunmanus Bay. Largely shagged with trees it affords a very easy climb with little but its easiness to commend it.

Start from A (VA (V988 419)) and follow the Sheep's Head Way as it gently winds uphill. After c. 800m the path comes alongside the forest adorning the hill's south side and continues for another few hundred metres over a few ups and downs before passing just north of the summit knoll, crowned by a few untidy rocks. There are very average views to the north, and no views to the south owing to the encroaching trees.

A short traverse can be made, as the continuation of the Sheep's Head Way descends to the same road from which you commenced: turn right to regain the start.

Challenge? Not really, views beautiful though

I agree with the comments by the previous poster as regards the difficulty of this summit, however before writing off the view it may be worthwhile seeing it. I find the view West from Derrylahard wonderful (pic 1). In addition the sheeps head now continues along the ridge to Mt Corrin at:
B (V941 390) this walk while not being tremendously challenging has great views North West to Beara and West to Dunmanus Bay, I would highly recommend it. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/955/comment/15057/

Not very hard
by Peter Walker 14 Jun 2012
Imagine my surprise to be the first to comment upon this veritable Matterhorn of the Mizen peninsula (he jests)...anyway, having been practically blown over on getting out of the car at Mizen Head itself, a quick Plan B was required. The Sheep's Head Way runs over Derrylahard East, and can be used from either of the access points on the road to the north. I chose (A (V988 419)) where there is room on the other side of the tarmac to leave the car.

It would take a fair amount of talent to go astray, as the track meanders up a gentle southerly incline to meet the forest (a bit wet initially) before striking more purposefully uphill alongside the trees. After a little dip the track passes a few yards north of the highest point, marked by a few rocks of either natural or unnatural origin (see photo). If the mist that marked my visit is absent there is probably an unremarkable northward view; the prospect to the south (to the sea) is probably finer, but owing to the adjacency of the forest only a Spring-Heeled Jack(ill)-type creature is ever likely to see it.

The whole exercise requires an absence of 30-45 minutes from the car. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/955/comment/6291/
