Cullenagh Mountain is the highest of a group known as the Slieve Lough Hills or Dysart Hills. On the northern edge of this range is the Pass of the Plumes (Ir. Bearna na gCleití), site of a famous battle in 1599, in which the O'Moores of Leix routed the forces of the Earl of Essex.
