A boggy trek or a national looped walk
Short Summary created by jackill  6 Dec 2012
Park on the roadside at C64255 43318 starA, room for only one car. Head east on a muddy track turning right at an indistinct junction to pick up another track at C64367 43326 starB(approximately). Follow this, and it becomes very, very wet and muddy, to a dirt road at C65133 43496 starC.Cross the road and head uphill, handrailing a wire fence across bog to the summit .Crocknasmug can also be climbed by way of the Inishowen Head Loop. Trailhead 23 of the National Looped Walks - parking in the car park beside Stroove Lighthouse and walking in a clockwise direction - turning left at C6618044014 starD (Point H) to the summit which is marked by a column of 4" concrete blocks. Walk up because it is there!
by Harry Goodman  19 Nov 2012
(Note: this summit comment refers to the highpoint to the west called Crockaulin. A DGPS survey in March 2012 established Crocknasmug as the higher)

This is one of those hills which requires little or no effort to reach the top and where the parking place is by far a better viewpoint than that from the top of the hill. This said, I parked at a car park/viewpoint area at C6280342340 starE crossed the road and went directly up a rough grassy track to the first top C6253942264 starF and then down and up to the trig pillar at C6249042056 starG. Rather than use the transmitter access road I opted to traverse down across the hillside back to the start. to be treated by a beautiful evening view across to a sunlit Magilligan Strand and Binevenagh making the visit worthwhile. If in the area drive up for a superb view from the car park and take in the top on a 20/25 minute stroll and 1km of walking. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/928/comment/6405/

Confused
by sandman  19 Nov 2012
Confusion arises over this hill and its neighbour Crockaulin which is app 3.5 km away. It was only when Simon explained that the Mountain View surveyor discovered that Crocknasmug was higher thus removing Crockaulin under the current prominence rules.
Crocknasmug is best climbed by way of the Inishowen Head Loop. Trailhead 23 of the National Looped Walks - parking in the car park beside Stroove Lighthouse and walking in a clockwise direction - turning left at C6618044014 starD to the summit which is marked by a cross of 4" concrete blocks. Enjoy the views and return back to marked way, including trip to summit app 9km walk. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/928/comment/14878/

Short walk with superb views of Binevenagh
by three5four0  19 Nov 2012
(Note: this summit comment refers to the highpoint to the west called Crockaulin. A DGPS survey in March 2012 established Crocknasmug as the higher)

There is a small car-park at C627423 starH, from which it is a short stroll to the first top of Crockaulin and a mere few minutes more to the summit and trig point. Only downside is the fact that the transmitter sort of spoils, what is otherwise, a superb view of Binevenagh. Walk around the fencing at the transmitter to the access track, continue along this to the road, turn left and your back at the car-park in no time at all. Breezey blocks

The summit of Crocknasmug has a bit of an unusual summit cairn.
Fine views all around are your reward for a quite boggy but short trek. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/928/comment/14877/

Inishowen Head Loop Walk
by pearnett  23 Sep 2018
As I parked up in the car park beside the Stroove Lighthouse I then began the loop walk around Inishowen Head in an anticlockwise direction. The first part of this walk is along a road past a few houses and up quite a short steep incline and as you come to a makeshift parking bay you look out across the Irish sea towards Scotland the island you see is Islay in the distance and turning right you then see Rathlin Island of the Irish coast. As you walk on you come to Portkill where St Columba set foot on Irish soil for the last time before setting off to Iona. You then come to a steady decline before turning left into a long incline over quite a boggy area before coming onto a good firm path which brings you to the height of the walk, there is what appears to be a standing stone on the top of the hill which may temp you to go and see it but don’t bother it’s just a pile of bricks stacked on top of each other and not worth walking through the very boggy patch. You then continue on before descending down a steep track towards the R241 turning left and back round to the car park. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/928/comment/20070/
