Summary for Derkbeg Hill (Cnoc na Deirce Bige): A short but very worthwhile walk.

Picture: View of Derkbeg Hill from the approach track.
From the R250 from Finntown to Glenties take the L2583 A (G841 974) and 1.7 km along note a rough stone and gravel track on the right B (G825 968). This leads up to L Nacroaghy and gives access to the hill. Drive up the track for 250 metres to a gate and park on the left side in a large cleared area C (G82315 96980). Follow the track N to the lough and then around its W shore crossing a couple of step stiles. It ends at some large livestock sheds D (G82414 98328). From the back of the sheds follow a fence steeply up the hillside on to the open hillside and the start of the ridge up NE to the summit, passing on the way some large boulders and a large rocky up crop which can be easily crossed or contoured around on the right side. The high point of the hill lies on a large flat peat hagged summit area at E (G82943 98827) and is unmarked. Although partly blocked by Agla Mt SE across the valley a number of the Bluestack tops can be seen as can the mountains to the SW, Slievetooey and Slieve League. Distance out and back 4.6km.

Go and enjoy.

I climbed this hill on 14 August 2013 . From the R250 Finntown to Glenties I took a minor road L2583 on the right A (G841 974) and 1.7km along also on the right side noted a rough stone and gravel track B (G825 968) which led up to L Nacroaghy. As there was no roadside parking available to me I drove up the track for about 250 metres to a gate across it and a large parking area on the left C (G82315 96980). Having parked, I followed the track through a small valley as it led up to the lough and my first view of Derkbeg Hill across its still waters. Continuing around the W shore the track ended at a couple of large livestock sheds D (G82414 98328) where I met a farmer gathering in some sheep. He was very welcoming to my being on his land. On his advice II followed a fence up steeply from behind the sheds which soon led me out on to the open hillside and the start of a gently sloping ridge up to the summit. On the way up I passed a number of large boulders and a large rocky up crop which I crossed but could have contoured around on its right side. It can be seen to the left of cenre in the photograph. Further up I passed another large erratic before reaching the large flat peat hagged top. Altough the top is unmarked I recorded it as F (G82943 98837). Views SE were blocked to some extent by Agla Mt but there were unrestricted views out across Glenties to the high tops of SW Donegal. I also climbed Croaghleheen earlier in the day as the start points for the two walks were only a short drive apart. I returned by way of ascent, 4.6km out and back.
