This can be approached on a track from the east starting from PolCapl (V84948 72174). Just 200m south of this there is some not necessarily easy parking. Another route is from the north starting from roadside parking at around A (V8391 7328). Take a route S along the side of the forest eventually heading SW towards the summit over rough ground (see Track 1718) The going gets easier the higher you go.
It may be easier to visit Poulacapple 349m first, which has the advantage of walking along the ridge between the two with views to the Kenmare River to the South and a really good vantage point for the Knocklomena to Boughil end of the Dunkerrons to the north.

It doesn't get much easier than this
by Conor74 7 Jun 2010
Parked car at RsCoos M (V849 719), just where a new house being built. Parking tricky enough, but there are a lot of houses on the road leading west from here, and a few have enough space at roadside so you can leave car without obstructing the driveway. Walked north about 150 metres, past 2 gates leading to fields, and the third gate has a very clearly defined track that leads up to a few old sheds, this is at v PolCapl (V849 721). Went up this road and after just ten minutes or so could get a good view of the summit ahead. There is an old abandoned house near the end of the road, and behind that is the summit. Lovely views of the Kenmare Bay, the Iveragh Mountains, the Reeks and the Cahas - only downside is that you can see lots of houses built at the foot of the mountain overlooking Kenmare Bay, so although I met no other walkers it certainly is not remote. I guess most walkers around here head for more dramatic challenges in the dozens of peaks one can see from the top. The summit has no mark or cairn. Very accessible, no fences to cross, and only half an hour from car to summit. There is a fence leading north west to Poulacapple, so went back via that summit. Weather was very good but suspect boggy area between the two can get a bit wet, but going generally very easy although no track or path. From the top of Poulacapple turned south to meet the road below the old house referred to earlier. Nice day, all in all it took just over an hour to get from car to both summits and back to car, no obstacles, no dogs, no angry farmers. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/894/comment/5856/

One for a Dreich Day
by three5four0 3 Oct 2011
Followed Conor74's route up Knockanaskill, on a very dreich day indeed. Low mist, light rain and a strengthening wind. Ah, summer in Co. Kerry!

An ideal route for a less than ideal day, with the ruined buildings adding a bit of atmosphere in the mist. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/894/comment/6557/

Short circuit with great views
by markmjcampion 16 Feb 2021
I parked at B (V85017 73405) and walked south on the public road to approx. PolCapl (V84948 72174) keeping an eye for a lane on the right [just past a large two story house]. I followed Conor74's route to the summit and headed west from here for 1.2km to the adjacent spot height, enjoying great views of Kenmare River and Beara to the south and the Boughil to Knocklomena hills to the north.
From here I doubled back to Knockanaskill and headed NE to the obvious subsidiary top. From here I had an entertaining descent through a fire break which starts at approx. C (V84172 72658). It was a fast descent on ground that I expected to be much wetter and rougher. I had to pop into the forest on the left near the end as the firebreak didn't reach the road but this was easy to navigate. A relaxing couple of hours.
