An enjoyable walk on the Comeragh Plateau
by Harry Goodman  28 Jul 2011
Climbed this top on Sat.28 May 2011 as part of a circuit that also included Coumfea West Top and Coumfea. (For earlier part of the route see my comments on Coumfea). On leaving Coumfea S2952809752 starD we headed N down the broad spur to a saddle S2960010300 starE (check point in event of misty conditions) and then up the slope to Coumfea N Top, an unimposing small pile of stones on top of a peat hag amidst a mass of similar hags and white sand at S2957810725 starF. Initially I had intended to complete the circuit by going NW down the spur to Pt 317 and then further down to pick up our outward track at S2831311290 starG. However at the top we met up with one of the local Mountain Rescue Volunteers and on his suggestion decided to lengthen our route by going down NE around the rim above the Spillogue Loughs and past the top of the waterfall at S3000011200 starH for a view of "sean bhean ag caitheabah tobac" where we saw the "smoke" but no sign of the old lady! We then continued around N and then NW down the spur to a fence at S2937412674 starI and then W down a well defined small narrow spur. Our intention was to meet the track coming down from The Gap and follow it back to the car park but although we must have crossed its path we did not find it and ended up at S2808813002 starJ some 90m higher up the slope! From here we made our way down to the car park S2760012800 starK. Our circuit over Coumfea West, Coumfea and Coumfea North was some 13km and took just over 5 hours excluding stops.
