This peak is moderate in stature but has quite a pointed top. It gives its name to the Slieve Miskish range but is not the highest peak within it (Knockoura, 490m). The meaning of the name is obscure, but given the sharp profile, a connection with miosgán, ‘haystack’, is possible (see Benwiskin and Slievenamiskan).   Miskish Mountain is the second highest hill in the Slieve Miskish area and the 987th highest in Ireland. Miskish Mountain is the most northerly summit and also the most easterly in the Slieve Miskish area.

To the Top via the Beara Way

There is enough room to park a car, just off the minor road, and not block the track at V65907 46089 starA. From here follow the Beara Way up hill along a good track, past the loop walk junction at V65190 46729 starB (the old beara way) till another junction at V65053 47055 starC. Now follow this bog track and then the Beara Way Markers up open hillside. Once the Beara Ways high point on the ridge is reached, leave the Way markers behind and climb up the South ridge leading to the summit of Miskish Mountain.

I would like to have commented on the stunning views from the summit, but it was mist down and raining heavily when we reached the top. Also worth a visit is the stone circle, below Miskish Mountain, just off the minor road outside Castletownbere, at V66570 46243 starD. No Spinal Tap this one! Misty Morning Mountain Hop

I followed Three5FourO's excellent instructions and also like him i headed up into the mist from the markers for the Bere way. The ridge line was narrow and with a fence line all the way up getting confused is not an issue. One final fence at the end to cross and some small stones marked what should be (on a clear day) good views of Bere island and Castletownbere Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/857/comment/23795/
