Connemara in the round

An easy to access and navigate hill, well worth it for its central position and views in every direction. Park as previously suggested at A (L8530 4820) and head north east before swinging north. The western view of The Twelve Bens with Errisbeg away to the south and Mweelrea away to the north is fantastic. The Maamturks with the passes of Maamochoige and Maamean notched into it to the east are laid out nicely too. Conditions when I reached the top meant while hazy, cloud keeping the Inagh Valley in shade and a settling sun casting a lateral light beyond the mouth of Killary combined to allow me to see as far as Clare Island and jagged Achill Head some 60km away between the flanks of Mweelrea and Garraun. Glimpse from the north.

Coming down from the Devilsmother by its westerly spur, this was a view of Lissoughter (black and central), looking like it is a peak viewed over a heaving ocean.

The first and second intervening spurs are off Tonalee, to the right of the picture. The higher slope on the right is Knocknahillion making up part of the famous Maamochoige pass. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/828/comment/14709/

The Devil

Lissoughter provides a magnificent view of much of the Maamturks and the Bens. One aspect of the view of the former is a fascinating keyhole through the Turks at Maamochoige, familiar to any that have done the Maamturks Walk as the second lake.

Through this keyhole lies a summit visible on a good day as seen in Exhibit A to the left on the photo taken in 1998. But what is the top? The shape of the summit isn't at all obvious, or at least not to me.

Working with maps to figure this out is sort of tricky since the path to this summit goes over 3 OSi maps. So turning to one new reliable for this sort of research, Google Earth, I came up with the synthetic view, Exhibit B.
And yes, combining the Devilsmother with some of its spurs and ridges does lead to an outline similar to what you can see in the picture. So it's the Devilsmother, 14.1km at a bearing of 22 degrees. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/828/comment/14710/

Attack of the Bees

Followed jimbloomers directions which are spot on. No fence so access to the open hill is easy although strangely enough there is a fence all the way around the summit. Fantastic views of the Bens, Turks, Mwleerea, Loughs Glendollagh, Inagh and Derryclare. When I reached the summit I was set upon by a swarm of bees that were darting in around my head to warn me I had encroached on their turf. A few quick snaps and I was on my way. Wet weather alternative?

From the minor cul-de-sac road to the SW. Parked about 400m S of the settlement at A (L8530 4820) - this avoided the enclosed fields and gave access straight onto the open hillside initially heading NE before turning N on the steeper ground .
