One way up is from the newly tarred (2012) road where there space for a few cars to park near R93092 70540 A without blocking gates. Ascend straight up through the forest beside a fence and later a broken wall. For an easier start find a looping track, shown on the OS 1:50000, that goes NW at first.

Took route that is described previously. Suggest parking on left just beside ruined building which is 50m downhill from farm gate mentioned. It is possible to avoid the open fields as I had to do with dog in tow by clambering up bank and tracking along just inside the fence. Either way you eventually come across a wide stony track (the visible scar that you can see on the road from Dolla to Silvermines). Summit is trig-marked as well as a small hillfort and there are some good views to be had (especially if you walk SW from summit to the shoulder of the hill as this photo looking towards Ballincurra Hill shows. There's space for one car beside (but not blocking) the gate at R93092 70540 A. I went through said gate and followed the fence that handrails the forest (on the right as you look up the hill). You can follow this fence and a wall all the way to the trig pillar at the summit for some pleasant views north and east. I could not identify the route directly up from the road as described in the short summary, as it seems to have become completely overgrown. Instead I crossed the gate on the left that led into a dark forest track, followed it for 400m to the NW to R92904 70974 B, where it swung to the NE for 100m then turned back SE for another 400m, leaving me at a gate on the left at R93257 70687 C. Crossing this left me beside the aforementioned old wall/fence. I ascended NE up the steep slope but had to overcome multiple obstacles, including forestry, lots of gorse, briars and had to cross the barbed wire fence several times to advance.
