Parking for a couple of cars may be found at H11332 18372 A. Cross the gate and head NW through an initially thin strip of forestry. The forest track ascends fairy steeply (as forest tracks go) for about 1.5km. Ignore the track to the right and pass a disused quarry on left, before track emerges onto open hillside. A rougher track curves around to the left briefly and when this ends continue NWW for about 800m over rougher ground, a mixture of heather and long grass. The summit is a broad heathery area and is unmarked. Good views of the surrounding Breifnes and the small Bartonny Lough. Allow 1.5 hours up and down. The most difficult thing about Bartonny Top is finding the start of the walk. If you do it as a one-off, this may be the best option: At Derrynacreeve T-junction (between Ballyconnell and Swanlinbar) take the turn signposted 'Ballinamore/Glangevlin/Sligo'. Drive for a few miles, then turn right at the signpost for Corlough. Drive through the hamlet and take a left at the T-junction. Take a right at a school and when you get to another T-junction, take a left. After a few minutes you'll see a gate on your right with an obvious track ascending to forestry (see pic). There's plenty of space to park here.
The forestry road ascends for a kilometre or two (ignore a road branching right), passing a disused slate quarry and emerges through a gate onto open hillside. Passing turf cuttings, negotiate a fence, and ascend a grassy hill up to moorland plateau. There's a quad track that will bring you almost to the heathery knolls at the 'summit'. It's a bleak spot but there's wide views, NE to the escarped Benbrack and further to the Iron Mountains and Slievenakilla. Tiny Bartonny Lough stands out in an area of muted colour.
