Head above the crowd.

South of the main Wicklow summits are a number of smaller tops poking their heads above the South Wicklow/ Wexford plains.
Even if you been to all of the summits it's tricky to remember which is which. If you are looking for at least one distinctively recognisable in the crowd, then such is this summit because of its distinctive triangular shape and the plethora of telecoms towers on it. It's very identifiable from many of the South Wicklow/ North Wexford hills.
Slieveboy is 34.6km from Lugnaquillia from where this was taken and is central in the picture. The nearer summit is part of Ballycumber Hill around 19km away from Lugnaquillia. A flying visit!

Approached slieveboy from the East side roadway which when followed will take you all the way up to the "Slieveboy loop" which is a track which circles the hill.Continue around either side of the loop and you will meet an ascending track/detour which will bring you all the way to the summit. Great views of surrounding hills on a clear day.Roughly an hour up and down should be plenty of time for a leisurely walk.Note:A lot of flytipping evident on the hill from the entrance gate all the way to the top.-Shame :( Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/739/comment/6318/

Wexford Wonder

I think the best approach is from the village of Askamore to the north. At just under an hour it takes a little longer to reach the top but the roads to Askamore are better than the bumpy narrow road to the southern approach and there's a very large parking area in the heart of the village. Askamore is well signposted from Cranford on the Gorey Carnew road. There's a good map of the route to the summit by the parking area. From the village go past the church on your left and up the obvious track. After 25 minutes or so you come to a crossroads at the end of a steep climb. Turn right here and keep left at the fork after 100 yards. After another 10 minutes turn right onto a track that climbs steeply. Then you lose some height but it soon switchbacks to the left to take you to the summit. To the north I could make out the triangular shape of Croghanmoira beyond Croghan. The Blackstairs dominate the view to the south and I could just make out the speck that was the town of Bunclody nestled beneath them. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/739/comment/6516/

Slieveboy stands in splendid isolation, offering 360 degree panoramas to the Blackstairs, south Wicklow Mountains, and the Irish Sea. We approached from the south and east, parking at the forest track entrance at Sl'BoySE (T02728 57076), and following the forest track shown on Sheet 69 to the south. This eventually gets you to the track shown running N-S on the ridge south of Slieveboy's summit, though Sheet 69 isn't 100% accurate here. The tracks wind their way east and north up to the summit, which gives new views around every corner.
The summit itself is a complex of no less than four telecommunications installations, complete with masts, transmitters, and associated equipment. I guess the attributes that are good for all-round views are also good for telecoms companies. In spite of all this development, the summit itself is at least accessible. Left Right Left, goodboy!

Thursday 2/01/2014. Climbed Slieveboy today, my approach was from the Village of Askamore I drove up a rough track beside the church past a waterworks and further on a liitle white cottage on my left then the track steepened sharply and deteriorated badly and I was unable to drive any further so I parked my car on the left at a forest entrance. I walked steeply uphill for about 5mins and reached A (T026 575) and followed directions from previous Mt View comments, Left, Right, Left on excellent forest tracks and made my way to Summit amongst all the masts, nobody here trying gain a few extra feet! looked towards Carrigroe Hill and so back to Car by outward route and here we go again!
