The River Liffey rises high on the slopes of Kippure. The name as shown on Discovery map is simply a transliteration of a pronunciation collected locally, but without any clear meaning. It resembles ciop, 'stump' and iúr, 'yew', but 'stump of yew' would be Ciop Iúir. Yew is unlikely to have ever grown near such a high exposed summit, but the name also refers to a townland which descends to the valley, so a connection with yew is not impossible.   Kippure is the highest mountain in the Dublin area and the 74th highest in Ireland. Kippure is the most southerly summit in the Dublin area. Kippure is the highest point in county Dublin.

River Liffey Source, Kippure Summit and Upper & Lower Lough Bray 06/01/2006
Decided to take my first real hike to a place that i love alot. The Bray loughs were part of many a college assignment for Glacial Geography a number of years ago. The view up here is fantastic.
So I started at the Liffey Head Bridge (o137137), trekked across some quite marshy bogland for around a kilometre. I arrived at the Source of the River Liffey and was rightly surprised to see how relatively small it is. Anyway, off i went up towards Kippure. I decided to take the road route to the top, which afforded me the time to take lots of pictures of various mountains, Bray, Kippure Summit and a herd of deer. A well earned rest and some hot food was had at the summit. Again more pictures were taken. Once i had refuelled, off i went eastward to the Bray loughs. Twas soft enough underfoot in places. I then decided to trek down the steep pass between the two lakes. As i left the lakes heading back up to the road, i couldn't help but feel ashamed by the two burned out cars near the stream. Haded back up to the RTE entrance. Overall, i was rightly worn out. But it was nice to get away and have some quiet time (and it was very quiet).
