Picture: Summit stones
Usually done in conjunction with Purple Mountain - in fact it is virtually impossible to do this in isolation. Park at the Gap of Dunloe (parking for a few cars) and follow the track as indicated on that mountain's short summary. From the summit of Purple it is a relatively simple, albeit steep in parts, descent of 100m over about 0.5km to the col towards the NE. There is then a gentle ascent over a few hundred metres of about 40m, with the going pretty firm, mixture of grass and rock. There is a cairn near the summit, but the highest point is marked by a 'pointy' pile of stones a short distance away.

I think it's fair to say that Purple Mountain NE Top (or Tomies South) offers probably the best views across to the reeks from the Purple Range. Standing at the summit Cairn, the views on a clear day are breathtaking. (Sorry for two comments on the same top but it's my excuse for posting a second picture!!) From Purple, this is about as easy as it gets. A short jaunt downhill along the distinct track followed by an even shorter walk uphill leads to the cairn at the summit of PNE Top. Referred to as Tomies South in the Harveys Map and by Paddy Dillon in his book, I think Purple NE Top probably makes more sense given that the spot height is actually higher than Tomies Mountain proper. The NE top offers more superb views across to the reeks. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/72/comment/4409/

This top seems to be known to many as Tomies South. It's very easy to
climb as you have to have done the hard work to reach the one of the three summits around
it . The view is wonderful. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/72/comment/1892/

Purple Mountain West (West??) Top is outshone by its majestic neighbour, but has the merit of a splendid situation at the hub of the Purple-Shehy-Tomies group. Great views all round, and easy walking over its summit too. The photo shows the ridge to Purple Mountain. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/72/comment/1896/

Geo on Purple Mountain NE Top

After the main summit of Purple mountain, getting to Purple NE Top was a relatively easy job. We had to be careful though as the snow we had been going through was now much more frozen and liable to cause a slip. This top was only briefly visited as we wanted to get over to Shehy and find a sheltered spot for lunch. Chapter 3 of my saga is found under Shehy comments.
