Summary for Fananierin (Fán an Fhearainn): A ridge end overlooking Glenmalure.

Picture: Fananierin browns before Croaghanmoira
Fananierin sits at the NE end of a ridge from Croghanmoira North Top. Many would consider this ridge to be the second best ridge that Wicklow has to offer, after the Derrybawn ridge.
The most direct way of reaching it is from the west. Leaving Glenmalure Lodge head up the Military Road towards Drumgoff. At approximately MlRd Fan (T102 893) there is a forestry track and barrier on the left. Follow the track and emerge below the summit.
Other routes include coming from Croaghanmoira starting from the car park around A (T08750 87595). A difficulty with this area is that the landowners to the east of Fananierin discourages access. However as of Jan 2019 contact with local landowners appears to indicate that it is ok to walk on the east side of the summit.
There are fine views from Fananierin to the local mountains and up the Glenmalure valley.

Leaving Glenmalure Lodge head up the Military Road towards Drumgoff. At approximately MlRd Fan (T102 893) (Point A) there is a forestry track and barrier on the left. Head down this track and after a few minutes emerge from the forest into the meadows below Fananierin. (photo shows meadow from above). Pick a route across the fields and up to the ridge. It is a short climb but i was breathing heavily when i got up! Turn left and find your way over a fence and across various rises to the featureless summit. Lovely views of Carriglineen, Slieve Maan, Croghanmoira and the mountains around Glenmalure. Return time from forest track approximately 45 mins. There was a great view into the valley below Croghanmoira too, and it would probably be a lovely walk along the ridge to Croghanmoira herself. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/713/comment/3216/

padodes on Fananierin

This is the first photo of Fananierin on the website, I think, and was taken from the south-facing slope of Kirikee. Behind the summit stretches a thickly heather-cloaked ridge of the same name back to the unnamed hill at the top. To the left lies Croaghanmoira (unseen) and to the right the heavily afforested slope of Slieve Maan. Much of the lower wooded flanks of the mountain belongs to Ballinacor Estate and is preserved land. Although not as badly scoured by the passage of ice as the south face of Carriglineen on the other side of the Avonbeg River valley, it still shows some signs of its dramatic past. Easy walk with great views
by Colin Murphy 27 Apr 2010
A view of Fananierin from the road about 1.5km SW of Glenmalure. A couple of hundred metres further along this road there is a short forest track (with room to park) which leads to an open field. Go through a gate and follow the track up to the saddle and then turn NE for the top. An easy walk but rewards with great views of the glacial valley.
