Night navigation
by Ste  23 Jul 2013
Left Leitrim lodge car park at 1930 for a night navigation of wee slievemoughan, slievemoughan, and pigeon rock. Made it to slievemoughan with relative ease, however, conditions deteriorated, low thick cloud base of 250m and strong winds. Planned route aborted and descended to the windy gap to pick up a bearing to return to Leitrim lodge. Five hour planned route reduced to 3 hours. Would have pushed on but was on my own on my first night nav so safety first. This area was still quite boggy, certainly would need to be careful following any heavy rainfall. No cairn visible on wee slievemoughan. Good map & compass skills are essential here in poor visibility, however, there are excellent escape routes to features that can be handrailed to get back to Leitrim lodge or alternatively to hen mountain car park. Aiming off used a good bit to linear features and then handrailed or paced to planned location. Must come back in better conditions. Never seen such cloud, almost tropical as temperature high and humid. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/701/comment/15044/
