Ballyhourigan Wood Loop Walk (R78464 66609) on OSI sheet 59. Follow the forest track for about 2.3 kms, ignoring two left hand tracks, until you reach a junction at A (R80585 66339). Look out for the wide forest ride running up to your right just before the junction. 10 easy minutes walking up this rough ground will bring you to a cleared area, with the ‘high point’ probably just to the left at B (R80313 66189). The close forestry affects the views somewhat, but the summit of Keeper Hill is visible just 2kms to the east. Further away to the north west Tountinna is visible with its commanding position above Lough Derg. The Slieve Bernagh group, including Moylussa are also clearly visible on a good day to the west. Boolatin Top is easily combined with nearby Keeper Hill. Head back to the track junction below and follow it east. You can reach the summit of Keeper in another 4 kms.

Most people will probably bag this on their way up to Keeper from Ballyhoura woods, but beware, that handy-looking forest track shown north of the summit on Sheet 59 isn't actually a track. It's actually a forest ride with a large berm down the middle. Not the easiest terrain, but better than pushing through the forest. The summit area itself is a boggy, neglected area of the plantation. Unfortunately, due to the mist I wasn't able to sample the views. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/659/comment/3445/

Having climbed Keeper Hill on numerous occasions it was time to seek out Boolatin Top and pay my respects.
I used the Irish Trails "Keeper Hill Trek" route to get there.
Follow the brown trailhead signs from Newport to parking area in Doonane WoodsDoonane Forest Carpark (R78068 65175) then follow the purple Ballyhourigan trail arrows, initially north for 2km then east for another 3km. Just as you arrive at the junction where the climb to Keeper Hill starts you will see an opening on your right. This is apparently a "berm". It's not easy walking on a "berm", you'll find yourself switching from the tussocky top to the boggy bottom several times before you reach a point where it stops climbing. Turn left here and follow another "berm" for a short distance. I decided the high point was on the left of this berm, a rounded hillock with a sparse covering of knarly, lichen covered trees C (R80346 66157). It may not be the exact summit point but it had character so it was good enough for me :-)
Once you have summited retrace your steps to the junction where you have a choice of following the red arrows to the top of Keeper, continuing the purple Ballyhourigan Loop or returning the way you came. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/659/comment/14975/
