In the shadow of Keeper

Having climbed Keeper Hill on numerous occasions it was time to seek out Boolatin Top and pay my respects.

I used the Irish Trails "Keeper Hill Trek" route to get there.

Follow the brown trailhead signs from Newport to parking area in Doonane Woods R78068 65175 D then follow the purple Ballyhourigan trail arrows, initially north for 2km then east for another 3km. Just as you arrive at the junction where the climb to Keeper Hill starts you will see an opening on your right. This is apparently a "berm". It's not easy walking on a "berm", you'll find yourself switching from the tussocky top to the boggy bottom several times before you reach a point where it stops climbing. Turn left here and follow another "berm" for a short distance. I decided the high point was on the left of this berm, a rounded hillock with a sparse covering of knarly, lichen covered trees R80346 66157 E. It may not be the exact summit point but it had character so it was good enough for me :-)

Once you have summited retrace your steps to the junction where you have a choice of following the red arrows to the top of Keeper, continuing the purple Ballyhourigan Loop or returning the way you came. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/659/comment/14975/
