Picture: Lough Anaffrin
This top is usually done as part of a larger walk e.g. when doing the Corranabinnias, but can be bagged in about four hours if you choose to do so. Turn off the N59 at Bunnahowna Bridge ( BunHown Br (L857 965)) and continue up narrow road for 500m until you reach a gate, which is part of an official Greenway walking trail. Go through gate and continue for about 500m, where the trail branches to the left, but also deteriorates in quality – you may choose to park here or continue up the trail for about 800m but it is driveable only with caution. Eventually this track peters out but there is room to park and turn at the end. From this point walk directly north up the gently rising eastern side of Glennamaddoo valley for 2.5 km. The ground is generally firm in dry weather – a mixture of long grasses and heather and shouldn’t present too many obstacles. Then veer slightly to the north east for 500m which will take you to the summit of Maumthomas SW Top top at A (F870 008), which isn’t particularly distinctive – a grassy area with a pile of stones marking the high point. Continue NE for precisely 1 km, a walk which affords wonderful views of Lough Anaffrin to the north. This will take you to the summit of Maumthomas NE Top, which like its taller brother is simply a grassy area with a solitary rock marking the highest point.

This is a rock strewn bulge on the ridge between Claggan Mtn (NE Top) and the big pull up Corranabinnia SW. It would usually be visited as part of a traverse of that ridge.

The photo shows the ridge from the vicinity of Treel, the ridge that runs south from Corranabinnia SW. The rising land on the left is the narrow and interesting ridge from Anaffrin East Top. This ridge is pretty steep on both sides. The summit of Glenthomas Top is on the skyline, right of centre. The distant blue-grey summit framed by the col is Slievemore on Achill.
