Grogán may be a variant of gruagán/grógán. This can mean a pyramidal heap of turf-sods set on end to dry, or alternatively a hard patch of land [Dinneen]. The second meaning is probably the appropriate one, as this rare element is probably connected with Welsh grug ‘heather’, of which the usual Irish equivalent is fraoch. The same word also appears in An Grogán Beag and An Grogán Carrach, two neighbouring hills. See also Gruggandoo in the Mournes.   An Grogán Mór is the 713th highest place in Ireland.

Visited this top both day and night as part of a recent ML course. Fairly unexceptional physically, but with superb views and a lot of wildlife. We saw several peregrines in the area, along with the (not so) common lizard and usual skylarks/pipits/frogs. The area appears to be ungrazed/unused by man and so has a really wild feel. There is some passable camping spots at the nearby lough. Of course you have to accept that some bog crossing will be required. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/595/comment/3744/
