Dubbed the Matterhorn of Kerry by Richard Mersey, Mullaghanattin stands proud above Ballaghbeama (Ir. Bealach Béime, 'way/pass of the notch'. Together with its neighbour Beann and their satellites, it forms a horseshoe ridge that confines a narrow glen known as the Pocket.   Mullaghanattin is the third highest mountain in the Dunkerron Mountains area and the 60th highest in Ireland.

We considered the ascent from Ballaghbeama Gap too steep to be safe. So, we started from about V766776 starA where there is a small parking place. We headed up the slope. The ground was very rough particularly at the start - lots of holes and tussocks - then onto East Top and the summit. This took about 90 minutes. Afterwards we continued along the ridge to Beann and descended over rough ground towards Tooreennahone (close to point A in the short summary).
