Notes on name: The cliffs of Minaun are spectacular when viewed from Keel. They offer a popular launch site for hang-gliding. The summit is a magnificent viewpoint, giving a surprisingly broad view of all of Achill and much of West Mayo, considering its moderate height. For a walk to the TV mast on Minaun, see Siúlóidí Acla, walk K. The summit is a little further on. Sometimes spelt Menawn.

A very easy walk, and a bit of a cheat, but a great place to catch a magical Achill sunset. Follow the signposts for the summit from the Achill Sound to Keel road and park on top of the ridge beside the masts at MinMast (F670 027). Follow the easy broad ridge for about a kilometre until the summit is reached.

The ideal family walk. Access road takes you to within 1k of the summit and from there, it's a leisurely walk up an easy incline to the summit which is marked by a statue atop a cairn. With the access road, it would be a wonderful place from which to catch a sunset. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/561/comment/15165/

Simple yet stunning
by Colin Murphy 9 Aug 2021
I echo the comments of others in that this walk is very simple as you can drive most of the ascent where you reach a few ugly masts. Beyond these, however, the easy stroll up Minaun is magnificent in the panorama of Achill and the Mayo coastline, especially on a day like I experienced - blue skies, high twenties. Various commentators have remarked on the fine view from this summit. Tony Whilde [Ireland Walk Guides West 1978] mentions the view, including Croaghaun to the west, Slievemore to the north and the silver strand of Keel bay. He also wrote "Occasionally, I've watched porpoises in the bay and looked down on gannets fishing near the cliffs."

Perhaps you have been walking for a few days and need a light break. Well, one way up Minaun is to take the road. There is a large carpark near the top beside two sets of masts (TV and telecoms). Walk to the summit and enjoy the view on both sides.

Our view shows the cliffs south of the summit leading to Dooega Head. The highest point in the picture is at 265m. The Menawn Cliffs proper are to the SW and W of the summit (to the right of the picture.) The low double-humped island on the left is Inishturk. The even lower land stretching along the horizon from it is Inishbofin 35km away. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/561/comment/2708/

Drove up to the TV masts before making my way to the summit which is farther than it looks, its about a half an hour there and back, the views of the island are amazing, giving a complete 360 panorama Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/561/comment/2992/

Peter Walker on Minaun

On the right sort of evening, there can be few guiltier pleasures than the deplorably lazy drive up Minaun to watch the sunset. A leisurely 15-20 minute stroll leads to the main summit, and despite the kind of summer that even Noah might consider 'moist' the terrain was benign enough that boots weren't really needed. The views to either side of the ridge are very fine and spacious, so it's best to travel a little way down from the top and enjoy them to the full. The top itself is a lovely, breezy place to linger and watch the sun sink slowly into the sea to the left of Achill Head, safe in the knowledge that the car is within such easy reach.
