Both the Irish and English names refer to the characteristic shape of this hill, which looks as if a chunk has been bitten out of it between the main peak and Little Rock. Éile is the Irish name for Ely O’Carroll Country. It also appears in Durlas Éile (Thurles). See Máire MacNeill, 'The Festival of Lughnasa' (pp. 217-20) for details of the festive assembly on the Devil's Bit which took place on 'Rock Sunday' in late July.   Devilsbit Mountain is the 620th highest place in Ireland.
