Both the Irish and English names refer to the characteristic shape of this hill, which looks as if a chunk has been bitten out of it between the main peak and Little Rock. Éile is the Irish name for Ely O’Carroll Country. It also appears in Durlas Éile (Thurles). See Máire MacNeill, 'The Festival of Lughnasa' (pp. 217-20) for details of the festive assembly on the Devil's Bit which took place on 'Rock Sunday' in late July.   Devilsbit Mountain is the 625th highest place in Ireland.

An odd accolade
by Bunsen7  12 May 2017
Quite apart from anything else, this hill has the rather dubious accolade of having taken up a two-page spread in a Irish company's annual report during the 1990s. It's a funny old world! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/513/comment/19503/
