Long trek but worth it for the views
by Fergalh  3 Oct 2022
The starting point 765694 starA was full (there is parking for 5 cars) so went down to Silver strand and parked at the large car park and walked back to starting point and proceeded up track to the top. Whereas most people veer towards Mweelrea along the river I had a different way to go. There is a very noticeable SW Spur on Mweelrea whcih is around 370 metres high. Head South East for that skirting the lost valley farm at Uggol. This NW Spur is very notice able and veer to the southern side of it whilst trekking up and down numerous small ridges. You will face wet ground, a few river crossings and a waterfall. elephant grass, bracken and a heather bash trek. Soon this obvious summit comes into sight, a short climb leads to the summit directly below Mweelrea's southern wall with most unusual views of Killary harbour.
