Máire MacNeill comments on the place-names around Brandon as follows: From An Seabhac's compendium of the place-names of the district we learn that several places on the mountain have names suggestive of myths which recur at other Lughnasa sites, e.g. Macha an Mhíl (the Beast's Pasture), Faill na nDeamhan (the Demons' Cliff), Com na Caillighe (the Hag's Recess), Loch na Mná (the Woman's Lake), Cnoc an Tairbh (the Bull's Hill), etc. [MacNeill, The festival of Lughnasa, 105] Faill na nDeamhan on Brandon is paralled by Log na nDeamhan (Lugnademon) on Croagh Patrick.   Faill na nDeamhan is the 51st highest place in Ireland.

Lockdown luck

Following the Covid 19 lockdown exercise radius extension from 2 km to 5 km in early May I was lucky enough to have the Brandon ridge in my 'zone'. I accessed the ridge at Q458 066 starA from an ancient right of way known as An Bothar Mhileata which runs in an East West direction from near Cloghane to an area North of Dingle called Glens. From the col below Ballysitteragh travel in a northerly direction crossing An Gearan and Brandon Peak passing Brandon South Top on route to Mount Brandon. Well worth the diversion

When traversing the Brandon ridge the quite distinctive track does not go to the summit of Brandons South top but skirts around both it and Brandon Peak but it is well worth making the diversion.
