Corriegasleggaun was the first stop in a four top walk also taking in Lugnaquilla, Slievemaan and Cloghernagh, a long enough walk that took just under 7 hours. Starting at Carrawaystick bridge at point Flem FB (T0875 9215) took the zigzag track, (which I learnt was developed by the family of Charles Stewart Parnell for use while hunting) as far as B (T0760 0915), after which the track deteriorates and in places disappears altogether - there is a lot of erosion and walker damage to the trail. Continued along Carrawaystick valley and up the SE end of Kelly's Lough - all of which was a bit of a slog through muddy or boggy conditions. From there it was a straight jaunt 1km NW to the summit, which is marked by a cairn. As the day was quite beautiful at that stage, there were beautiful views of a snow-topped Lugnaquilla across the valley. It took just over 2 hours to reach the summit from the road. At the 'Carraway Stick Mountain' end of Corrigasleggaun - to be precise C (T063 904) - a rusted cross with an illegible inscription has stood for several years over a heap of tortured metal. Like many, I suppose, I couldn't remember what tragedy it referred to. I noticed this weekend, however, that the cross has been repainted and a new inscription affixed to it. It reads: "In loving memory of Frank Maher and John Lonergan who died in a plane crash near this spot on 2nd February 1992". I found a reference to the accident in the Irish Times of 5/2/1992. On page 3, it gives an account of the ill-fated flight of the Cessna that ended on this hillside and of the difficulties encountered in recovering the bodies. Kelly's Lough under Corrigasleggaun. There is a lovely walk along the top of Corrigasleggaun
overlooking Kelly's Lough. This is a beautiful area with Carrawaystick nearby and Cloghernagh on the other side of a narrow valley. The lake is suspended on the sides of Corrigasleggaun in magnificent surroundings. It is possible to descend to the lake at it's eastern end and reach the Carrawaystick Brook. I followed the Carrawaystick Brook recently to the Zig Zags but was denied access to cross a farmyard near the Carrawaystick waterfall. However I was permitted to follow the outside of a stone wall to reach the road back to Baravore. An alternative would be to cross the Carrawaystick Brook at the eastern end of Kelly's Lough and ascent Cloghernagh and descend by Art's Lough. See under Cloghernagh for route. Snow , fog, fog ,snow, more fog. Simon said " you'll be glad of the gps and pazapas' excellent map" and by the hokey was he right! The pull up , around and over icy Arts lough was clear but after that I was in the clouds.Arriving at the summit of Cloghernagh I very nearly turned around but decided to press on to the Lug(last of my 3000 footers, yahoo!). Then, Miracle!, the clouds began to break and the rest of my first foray in Wicklow was completed in bright sunshine surrounded by seas of cloud which occasionaly broke over me.Even in fog Wicklows mountains are magnificent highlands.
