Bedrock type: Medium grained pink-purple sandstone, (Knockmealdown Sandstone Formation)

Knockmealdown gives its name to the range as a whole, but the earlier name for these hills, along with the lower hill country to the east, is Sliabh gCua. There is a traditional air entitled Sliabh Geal gCua na Féile, meaning 'bright Sliabh gCua of the festival'. The name Maoldomhnach means ‘devotee of the church’. The surnames derived from this are Ó Maoldomhnaigh (anglicised Muldowney) and its variant Ó Maoldhomhnaigh (anglicised Moloney). Moloney is still a common surname in the vicinity. Some sources translate the name as Cnoc Maol Donn, 'bare round hill', but this is a poor attempt to interpret the name only on the basis of the modern anglicised form. The form Knockmealdowny, recorded in the Civil Survey in 1654, shows that was clearly an additional syllable.   Knockmealdown is the highest mountain in the Knockmealdown Mountains area and the 48th highest in Ireland. Knockmealdown is the second highest point in county Waterford.

Have always enjoyed my walks in Knockmealdowns, East & West. Recently approached from the Vee, climbing up the valley through thick undergrowth, although ther is a pathway. Some nice scrambling at top of valley to reach the ridge, care needed as the gulley is quite steep. Very poor conditions on ridge summit at the time but the wall provided good shelter for a bite to eat. Came down direct from Sugarloaf, again a bit slippy in places, but all in all a nice mix of walking, scrambling, treking. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/45/comment/741/

Approaching Knockmealdown(just visible ahead in the cloud)from the Sugarloaf/Knockmoylan along the county boundry wall,
Pat tries to strike up a conversation with the locals.
Start from the Beal loch carpark 031 101 starA and follow the track up the Sugarloaf beside the county wall until it turns - a short detour to the left is the actual summit. Then back to the wall and walk along beside it passing Knockmoylan (768 mtrs) to the summit of Knockmealdown.

Recently I decided to walk the route of the Knockmealdown challange to stretch the legs on a November Saturday. At the end of it I was wondering what idiot thought it would be a good idea.

Decided to climb the Sugar Loaf, Knockmoylan and Knockmealdown today. En route from the Vee via the Grubb monument plenty evidence of trail bikes making the same trip. At the top of the Sugarloaf the cloud descended and that was it as regards visibility, which was a pity, but at least no rain. You could hear the bikes all around in the fog. On approaching the summit of Knockmealdown I was just congratulating myself on bagging another county summit when out of the gloom appeared a helmet clad figure with his machine resting at the base of the trig pillar.
Whilst I like to see everyone enjoying the mountain somehow a trail bike on a summit doesn't do anything for me. Anyway he was a nice lad and we chatted briefly before he zipped off in the dircection of Knockmoylan. Al in all a nice part of the country and I will return again.
