Bedrock type: Dark fine-grained cherty limestone, (Dartry Limestone Formation)

Benbulbin, with its limestone escarpment resembling the prow of a ship, is one of the most recognisable Irish mountains. It is also steeped in legend. It takes its name from Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine hostages, who was fostered here. Fionn Mac Cumhaill finds his son Oisín naked under a rowan tree on Benbulben, having not seen him for seven years. It is also the spot where Diarmuid Ó Duibhne is finally killed by a boar, after he and Gráinne have been pursued for many years throughout Ireland by Fionn. Sometimes spelt Benbulben.   Benbulbin is the 483rd highest place in Ireland. Benbulbin is the most westerly summit in the Dartry Mountains area.

I took this photo back in Feb, a cold day we decided to walk up NE side of Benbulbin. A steep grass bank, took forever and crampons were needed. Close to the top we were forced to decend due to heavy cloud, which dropped into the valley within minutes. The temp also dropped dramatically when the cloud cover enveloped the mountain. This photo shows the rock formation that the North side of Benbulbin is famous for. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/402/comment/6335/
