Benbulbin, with its limestone escarpment resembling the prow of a ship, is one of the most recognisable Irish mountains. It is also steeped in legend. It takes its name from Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine hostages, who was fostered here. Fionn Mac Cumhaill finds his son Oisín naked under a rowan tree on Benbulben, having not seen him for seven years. It is also the spot where Diarmuid Ó Duibhne is finally killed by a boar, after he and Gráinne have been pursued for many years throughout Ireland by Fionn. Sometimes spelt Benbulben.   Benbulbin is the 488th highest place in Ireland. Benbulbin is the most westerly summit in the Dartry Mountains area.

If Its Good Enough For Yeats...
by Aidy  17 Aug 2015
Approached from the newly included Benbulbin South-East Top starting out at point B on the map. From that summit, it was an easy stroll to the top. There were great views all along the broad ridge, and new ones from the top over Donegal Bay to the north. It is worth continuing past the trig to the top of the cliffs to the north to carefully peer over the edge at the land far below - a vertigo inducing sight. This is one of those iconic mountains figuring large in history and legends, which it feels special to stand on. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/402/comment/18253/
