Benbulbin, with its limestone escarpment resembling the prow of a ship, is one of the most recognisable Irish mountains. It is also steeped in legend. It takes its name from Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine hostages, who was fostered here. Fionn Mac Cumhaill finds his son Oisín naked under a rowan tree on Benbulben, having not seen him for seven years. It is also the spot where Diarmuid Ó Duibhne is finally killed by a boar, after he and Gráinne have been pursued for many years throughout Ireland by Fionn. Sometimes spelt Benbulben.   Benbulbin is the 484th highest place in Ireland. Benbulbin is the most westerly summit in the Dartry Mountains area.

Just moved to sligo this summer and have been admiring benbulbin for ages when I woke up to clear blue skies on a cold november morning so I thought what the hell give it a go. I followed emchugh directions and they were fairly accurate. One piece of advice, don't bring the dog, when we finally got up to the plateau the little git decided to run halfway down the mountain and chase a flock of sheep all the way round to the western slopes. Anyway after over an hour of not enjoying the spectacular views or taking the obligatory photo on the summit but instead pannicking that he had either a) eaten a load of mutton, b) chased the flock over a cliff like a load of lemmings or c) taken a digger himself. He finally came bounding up the hill looking a little worse for wear. So aprt from that a fun day out for all the family Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/402/comment/2911/

I challenge anyone to look at this mountain and not want to climb it! Best approached from the “sharp” end (off the N15). A number of different rough pathways. Views of the coast and countryside from the summit are unforgettable. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/402/comment/3315/

On the 4th of July I was on Benbulbin, and being a Yank, was wondering how to mark Indepedence Day. I met a bunch of people from Donegal, one of whom whipped out the Stars and Stripes. I wasn't aware Barack had altered the layout. Who needs fireworks. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/402/comment/3905/

Wow ! Where am I?

We climbed Ben Bulben in October 2012 and had planned to walk east from King's Valley. After five minutes we encountered so much dense cloud that we altered our route for safety reasons and headed north and west on a better known route. Later, the western wind dispersed the cloud to reveal again paradise on high! The accompanying picture captured one of those transitionary moments looking east from the area of King's Mountain over Glencar - but where is the lake - we know it is there?
