Started from the coillte car park in Ballycuggeran Woods . I took the track that starts at the information board which has signs for the East Clare Way. At the top of the first path you cross the forestry road and climb again. There are 4 such paths that cut off the turns in the road. They are quite steep so you can follow the forestry road if you prefer.
Eventually you follow the road until the signs show the wee yellow man going to the left. Go straight on past a no quads sign and you get to the notorious forest break. There has been logging and the forest to the left of the break, looking up, has been cleared. I will attach a photo.
The break is good underfoot but gets extremely steep further up before the boardwalk is met. Visibility was very poor with torrential rain and most. I stopped to take a photo and headed back down. Now the break was more like scree with the loose rock and the water run off. As soon as I was back to the forestry road the rain stopped and my trousers were dry by the time I got back to the car.
The walk through the forest had me wondering if I was on the right road but bearings proved me right. It seems like you are on various roads but it is only one with shortcuts between the bends. Stay on that road and all will be well Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/390/comment/19508/
