Approach from the North West
by Colin Murphy  1 Jul 2010
Decided to approach Knocknacloghoge from the less popular (and possibly in hindsight, less interesting) approach from the NW. Parked at Point 113 074 A at a sharp turn in the military road (room for a few cars) and walked back up the road about 750m to Point 120 074 B and then set off directly South East across heathery, gently rising terrain. It was bone dry the day I did it, but I imagine it would be a quagmire in the winter. The 'climb' is incredibly gentle - 250m over 2.5km, and the only time any effort was required was the the final 50m ascent. The route as I said was fairly uninteresting although one does get a wonderful sense there of being in the middle of nowhere, no roads, buildings or man-made structures visible in a 360 deg panorama. The summit itself isn't bad as Wicklow goes. It is rocky and defined and presents some fine views. There and back to the car 2.5 hours including a leisurely lunch.
