Nephin is a problematic name and few sources venture an interpretation. It is mentioned as one of the twelve great mountains of Ireland in Cath Maige Tuired (The Second Battle of Moyturra), where it is called Nemthenn. This is suggestive of nemeton, a Gaulish term for a sacred clearing in a wood or sacred grove. The word recurs throughout the Celtic world, from the Galatian Drunemeton ('sacred oak-grove' in modern Turkey) to Nemetobriga in Spain and Aquae Arnemetiae, the sacred spring at Buxton in Derbyshire. The Old Irish fidnemed refers to a shrine in a forest. [Barry Cunliffe, The Ancient Celts]. There seem to be no survivals of traditions connected directly with Nephin to confirm this. However, Nephin's much lower neighbour Tristia (322m, 4km to the NW) was the site of Lughnasa celebrations until recent times [Máire MacNeill]. Glen Nephin is the only example of an Irish glen (apparently) named after the mountain overlooking it. Walks: for a route to the summit from the E, see Whilde & Simms, New Irish Walk Guide - West and North, 69.   Nephin is the highest mountain in the North Mayo area and the 37th highest in Ireland. Nephin is the second highest point in county Mayo.

A steep quick way up
by Andy13460  31 Dec 2015
All the descriptions for Nephin appear to start up the long gentle ridge. I usually park at G119058 A
Walk up to the Pump house G115062 B then go through the gate in front then the gate to the right. Walk to the stream and cross it at G114063 C.
Follow the steep path up through the heather to G113067 D.
After this is climbing all the way to G109078 E.
Then follow the rock piles to the top
Total is 3.82 miles Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/36/comment/18412/

A looped climb from the North. Stunning views all around!
by derkelly274  22 Apr 2018
First time climbing Nephin for both myself and my friend. We decided to go at it from the North as it seemed like a more interesting prospect. There was access to the woods on the northern slope off the narrow road running E-W at G109104 F and we drove in here (the gate was open) to see how far it would bring us. Thankfully the road had been continued in a zig-zag up the hill, beyond what was on Google maps, to facilitate extensive felling of trees so we followed this and parked at the top G105099 G which was a great help. From there we followed the digger tracks through the felled tree area in a Southerly direction until we reached the stream that comes of the mountain. After fighting our way through a few remaining, unfelled trees we crossed the stream and headed towards the eastern ridge which was through fairly steep boggy heather, but totally manageable. Once on the ridge the climb was steady, on loose compact stone, with amzing views in every direction. We climbed up to the summit and came down the other side on the west to complete the loop and back to the car. A totally enjoyable day out along a great route with jawdropping views in every direction. Loved it! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/36/comment/19903/
