The element búc seems to be related to the dialect word buc, meaning 'point, summit' found in Southern France in mountain names, e.g. Buc Pointu. Walks: for a walk taking in Búcán and Binn Bhán (Maumturkmore), see Paddy Dillon, Connemara, 92-97.   Búcán is the 421st highest place in Ireland. Búcán is the most northerly summit and also the second most westerly in the Maamturks area.

A majestic day's walking in the Maamturks, we accessed Bucan from the Western Way at L836 612 C and began ascending in a SE direction over grassy, fairly gentle slopes that eventually become very steep. This approach which is from sea level requires an almost 600m ascent, so was quite tough, but the scenery on the ascent is simply incredible. Stopped for tea and sambos at the top, with a view that was quite incomparable and made the effort well worthwhile. Save this one for a bright, clear day.
