Bedrock type: Medium grained pink-purple sandstone, (Knockmealdown Sandstone Formation)

Another possible interpretation is 'sedge of the hornless cow' as maol is feminine in this name. However, note that this peak is in the townland of Meoul, which actually suggests Ir. meall, 'lump', rather than maol.   Knockmeal is the 397th highest place in Ireland.

The route from Crohan West to Knockmeal is as shown in the attached photo. There are the remnants of two almost parallel walls across a heathery col and there did not appear to be any obvious path which might indicate that this is not a frequently walked area.
