Navigation practice in total fog in a safe location
by nkenealy  13 Oct 2013
We parked the car in the middle of fog (couldn't see further than 10 yards) at O12819 20170 B (Point D) on the Military Road R115. There's a clear trail at first but it veered off to the left away from Glendoo summit so we had to be careful not to take that. The top is flat, featureless and boggy and we couldn't find the path to top because the visibility was so bad. It was just a quick walk on a Sunday morning but very good practice for getting used to navigating in total fog without any landmarks. Also the GPS battery went and I had forgotten spares. (Learned a lesson there) My map and compass got me safely back to the car but I would have had no idea which way to go without the compass - great practice for navigation - in a relatively safe location.
